Forgive me if I do not venture into the controversies surrounding the Sochi Olympics, but a centrepiece of interest is the patchwork quilt designed by Bosco di Ciliegi. It is the official ‘look’ of the winter games.
You can read an interesting article on the Sochi look and Russian quilts in general here.
The oldest quilt still extant is held in Russia. It is actually a Mongolian carpet made from quilted Linen and it dates from somewhere between 100BC and 200 AD. A visit to the Russian Quilters Association is highly recommended – it is a colourful antidote to our grey British winter. Here is an example by Russian quilter and author L. Denisova . It is called Hello Summer – aren’t we all longing to say those words!
